Frisian draughts board by D. H. Joustra, 1816 (1856)

Draughts

Draughts board with a chessboard on the back. The frame is decorated with cartouches containing the initials D. H. Joustra and the year 1816. The accompanying box with chess pieces again bears the name D.H. Joustra, the year 1856 and the place name Baart. The most likely owner was Douwe Hantsjes Joustra. He was a merchant in Baard and born on 9 April 1816. In 1857 he remarried Tietje Teekes Fopma and there may have been an occasion in 1856 when he had this draughts board made or it may have been given to him then. Private collection.
